Bernardo Carpio is a legendary figure in Philippine Mythology
Whenever an earthquake happens, it is believed that he is trying to break free from being trapped in between the two great boulders under the mountains of Montalban.
Bernardo Carpio struggles to free himself from his chains, while he also duels with the mysterious and powerful “salamangkera” (sorceress) who led him to his entrapment under “The Two Clashing Boulders” in Montalban.
This adaptation helmed by Rianne Hill Soriano depicts two beings fighting each other as the bigger force above them, the Spanish government, manipulates them both.
Project Background
With the support of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the main funding agency for the film, confirmed in January 2020, the turn of events of the pandemic led to a more solid attachment to the story: realizing how this adaptation of the epic focuses on Bernardo Carpio being locked down, which apparently reflected the people’s plight of being forced to stay inside their homes, unable to pursue their plans and passions due to a world in crisis.
This further grounded the project to keep up with the limitations of working in a completely virtual setting. For the artists involved, pursuing this project offered a means to bring more value to their lives in a pandemic world.
The motion-comics animation treatment utilized for the film expanded to a full-blown comics project with augmented reality (AR) component through the Innovation Grant from the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). This was in line with the team’s long-term goal to produce a series of original Filipino content inspired by Philippine literature using new media technologies.

With the current trends in globalization, Filipino history and heritage must be preserved. Many Filipinos can easily identify Superman, Thor, and Wonder Woman in their various renditions — but we also have characters of our own like Bernardo Carpio. Instead of remaining barely noticed in its current form, especially by our youth whose attention is geared more towards new media technologies, it can better find its way to modern consciousness by giving it modern updates such as this animated film.

Comics & Augmented Reality
Bernardo Carpio Komiks with Augmented Reality (AR) Component
The Bernardo Carpio Komiks is the first comics release in the Philippines to feature an augmented reality (AR) component.
This special comics release produced by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is a 12-page adaptation of the origin of the Bernardo Carpio lore. It presents how Filipinos in their own ways have become part of this mythical figure’s struggle through many generations.
The comics also features a bonus page of a traditional crossword puzzle that also works as trivia information about the epic tale of the demigod mythological hero of the Philippine Revolution. An accompanying mobile app for download allows users to engage with the 3D character versions of Bernardo Carpio and the “salamangkera” (sorceress) as AR renditions. The said mobile app also features additional content about the Bernardo Carpio project, which includes the comics and the animated film. The digital comics version is intended to be accessible to the public for edutainment purposes. Tuldok also looks forward to the use of the comics, mobile app and its AR features, and eventually, the completed animated short film, for schools, arts and culture groups, and individuals interested in exploring Philippine mythology. Tuldok is currently looking for funds to produce print copies of the comics as well.

Launch of the Bernardo Carpio Komiks with Augmented Reality and Mobile App for the Cultural Center of the Philippines' RISE Project under the CCP Innovation Grant
AR Mobile App
This free mobile app is required to access the augmented reality (AR) component of the Bernardo Carpio Komiks. It is available for download for Android users via Google Play.
The Bernardo Carpio AR mobile app is a basic edutainment package accompanying the Bernardo Carpio comics and the Bernardo Carpio animated short film. It intends to be a supporting platform for schools, homeschoolers, and those who are interested in Philippine mythology to learn more about the Bernardo Carpio tale as part of students’ lessons, people’s research materials, and education and entertainment endeavors. It also looks forward to reaching a wider demographics interested in Philippine mythology. As a jumpstart app made possible through a conservative grant, Tuldok hopes for future partnerships and fundings to update this app for its goal to produce, promote, and facilitate the creation of original Filipino content, as well as expanding of reach of Filipino heritage stories and characters.
Instructions for maximizing use of the Bernardo Carpio AR App
The mobile app features AR characters from the epic tale of Bernardo Carpio. It supports Tuldok’s goal to expand the reach of Philippine folktales and mythological characters using new media technologies.
It also provides a mobile phone access to the full digital version of Tuldok’s Bernardo Carpio Komiks and a behind-the-scene video of production of the comics, mobile app, and animated short film. The app provides educational information and trivia about the Bernardo Carpio lore as well.
- To experience AR, scan a comics page with the icon above.
- Click the AR button at the app’s Main Menu.
- Find the right AR trigger page from the comics matching the menu button in the app to see specific AR features. There are 3 AR trigger pages in the comics and each has a corresponding menu matching each AR feature: 1) Bernardo Carpio before his entrapment under the 2 two mountains of Montalban; 2) Bernardo Carpio struggling between the Two Clashing Boulders; 3) Bernardo Carpio and sorceress fight poses.

Bernardo Carpio Komiks Crossword Puzzle
The Bernardo Carpio Project primarily utilizes new media including animation, digital comics, and augmented reality, but Tuldok also intends to pay homage to the traditional crossword puzzle as part of the Bernardo Carpio Komiks.
Those who have the printed comics may take advantage of the dedicated crossword puzzle page (a bonus page in the comics), but anyone who wants a separate copy of the said crossword puzzle may do so using this free downloadable and printable version (PDF and JPG files). This is highly recommended for children, teens, and adults who miss the old-school crossword puzzles of the older days!
After completing the crossword puzzle, anyone may double-check the answers as indicated in the downloaded/printed page, as well as in the bonus page in the comics. A separate “Answers” page is easily accessible in the Tuldok website menu.
