This is a project funded under the Copyright Plus Program, a flagship project of the Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines. The concept for this project came up within the year of experiencing the lockdowns brought about by COVID. This resulted to a production workflow leading to a documentary project with three subjects interviewed via Zoom. Their interviews were utilized as soundbites for their animated versions and we eventually recreated the interviews in animation format.
The documentary subjects were three stalwarts of the Philippine animation industry: Avid Liongoren, director/producer of the critically acclaimed animated films Saving Sally and Hayop Ka!, Tanya Yuson, producer/writer of the top-rated Netflix anime series Trese, and Louie Suarez, director/writer of the Philippines’ first 3D feature film RPG Metanoia. Tuldok is grateful for this project as it further opened Tuldok members’ eyes on the importance of copyright in the creative industry and how artists can capitalize on the tenets of intellectual property, not only for arts and culture appreciation but also for economic benefits.
The Copyright Plus Program aims:
- to be able to identify and provide appropriate capacity-building projects and activities that would be unique, participatory, inclusive, and responsive to groups who belong to the marginalized, unserved, underserved, minority groups or persons with special needs who are in the creative industry;
- to form and forge a strong partnership with the project proponents in the implementation of the approved project proposals that would directly impact creativity in the identified sector and be sustainable;
- to create and provide access to copyright information, products, services, and other learning opportunities promoting copyright at the local level;
- to empower, develop and promote existing local and budding artists in the sectors to be copyright ambassadors of the marginalized, unserved, underserved, minority groups or persons with special needs;
- and to increase copyright registration from these groups.
According to IPOPHL, compared with their previous conventional programs and projects, the Copyright Plus is designed to be more proactive, unique, efficient, and responsive, to the need of the industry.
